Fire Prevention & Safety

Fire Extinguishers

Choosing a fire extinguisher involves important considerations. Such as who will operate the extinguisher, the nature of the fire, and the nature of the area to be protected. NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers, gives guidance in the classification of fires and the selection of extinguisher classified for that hazard.

The placement and installation of fire extinguishers are other factors to consider. Uniform distribution, accessibility, normal paths of travel, proximity of entrances and exits, potential physical damage, and availability should be taken into account.

Fire Extinguisher Inspection & Maintenance Considerations

In order to be effective, fire extinguisher inspections must be frequent. Building owners or designated personnel could check at the start or finish of each workday. A fire extinguisher inspection is a quick visual check to determine if the extinguisher is properly placed and will operate. The maintenance tag is then checked to determine the date of the last thorough maintenance check.

Even if a fire extinguisher has not been damaged or discharged, at a minimum once every 12 months a thorough maintenance check should be performed. Examining faulty or expired parts, cleaning and replacing any defective parts, recharging, and pressurizing the extinguisher should be done where appropriate.
